Over 400 veterans will convene this week in Snowmass Village, Colo. for the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic – Miracles on a Mountainside. As a partner to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), HMS is proud to sponsor this important event which provides disabled veterans the opportunity to participate in several adaptive sports and activities, and to send HMS volunteers to show our support. The Winter Sports Clinic is hosted by both the Disabled American Veterans organization and the VA and is the largest rehabilitative program of its kind in the world. The sporting events include kayaking, curling, fly-fishing, bowling, scuba diving, hockey, rock climbing, skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding. The Winters Sports Clinic serves as a great opportunity to enhance the lives of veterans who have been hindered by disability and to show that many opportunities still remain after a disability. As the largest rehabilitative program of its kind in the world, the clinic empowers and challenges our veterans to hit and reach new limits.

As an innovative healthcare technology company, HMS also greatly appreciates this is also an opportunity where new and advanced cutting-edge technology is leveraged in the healthcare space. For example, last year a paralyzed Marine who is wheelchair bound competed in a ski competition using a custom chair-mounted ski outfitted with a shock that looked as if it belonged on a mountain bike. Another Veteran – a triple amputee – used a custom prosthetic arm to allow him to hold an outrigger ski for his sit-down rig. These are just a few examples of how technology is making life better for veterans.
